Hi there, I’m Emily.
What am I all about? Well, I’m overly obsessed with my shelter cat, Philippe (pronounced Filipe (don’t ask…)). I can often be found with a mug of Earl Grey tea or iced coffee, or a chai tea latte… in my hand. Some of my favorite past times include walks in the woods and cooking up a mess in the kitchen.
Born and raised in central Pennsylvania, or PA as any true Pennsylvanian would say, I currently reside in Memphis, TN while my husband attends pharmacy school. Perhaps it comes from growing up so close to the Hershey chocolate factory, but I’m terrified of letting my supply of dark chocolate run low.
I like to think I’ve come a long way from building forts in the woods behind my childhood home. The truth is, I miss those days of carefree whimsey. Don’t we all? When I was a kid, I’d get lost for hours in daydreams and fantasies. I was enthralled by the mysterious and supernatural, so I’d act out my ideas through play. As an adult, daydreaming doesn’t get you on the short list for a promotion at work. So I found my way back to those precious days in the woods, through stories.

Falling in love with stories.
Looking back now, hobbies and events in my life pointed to a love of writing stories. And that’s really what I consider myself, a storyteller, rather than a writer. I’ve always loved telling and hearing stories. As a kid, I would dream up adventures and scenarios that would keep me busy all day.
After high school, I developed an interest in film and telling stories through that medium. In college, I chose broadcasting as my area of study, and loved it! But after college I struggled with what direction to take my career. I reluctantly took a job working for the family business but something kept nagging at me…
In September 2012, I pulled out an old journal my sister had given me a few Christmas’ ago, and decided to do something that terrified me. I wrote down the beginnings of a story that had floated around in my mind for years. It was only a few pages of sketched out notes, but I remember closing the cover rather defiantly and thinking, good, I’ve got it out of my system.
Those scribbles were the beginnings of my Camilla Crim series.
I wish I could remember how, but somehow later that month, I stumbled across a program called National Novel Writing Month (www.nanowrimo.com). The program, which was to begin in just a few days, was a challenge to write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. I started midnight on November 1st with no plan, no outline, and no idea where this would take me. In December, when the challenge was over, I didn’t stop writing and haven’t stopped since then.
What I stand for:
If you’ve made it this far then congrats! I’ll tell you a bit more about myself. I’m a born-again Christian which means I allow the principles of the bible to guide my life and my writing. My stories are clean. They’re full of adventure and passion, but you won’t find any curse words or sex scenes.
